4 Tips for Writing a Research Paper

Writing a research paper is a requirement for every student in college. By the time you graduate, you will have written many research papers that will contribute to the final grade. This means that you have to be serious when writing to ensure that you score good grades so that you can graduate with a good GPA. We have prepared some Dos and Don’ts of writing research papers to help you in your college life.

Use Many Sources of Information

For your research to have detailed information, you need to use many sources of information. The number of sources to use depends on the number of pages of your essay. For example, while you can write a two-page essay with four sources, these may not be enough when writing a 12-page paper. Some of the sources that you should use include:

  • Books
  • Articles
  • Peer-reviewed journals
  • Trade publications
  • Annual reports
  • Websites

Note that in the case of websites, you should be careful to select only reliable sites such as company websites. Avoid websites that cannot be relied on, such as wiki-how and Wikipedia.

Avoid Using First Person in Your Paper

Have you ever read an academic book that uses first or second person pronouns such as I, Me, You or We? Books and published articles do not use these pronouns because they are not accepted. Avoid them because they are subjective and using them may indicate that you have not researched your paper. Hence it seems like you are giving your opinions. You should only use third person pronouns because they are objective, and they are the norm in academic writing. If you don’t know how to use this, read more books and articles, and understand how to do it.

Always Proofread Your Work After Writing

Writing a paper always feels like you have finished the process and are ready to submit your assignment. However, you should take time to read and correct errors that you may have made while writing. When you read the essay, you may find more mistakes than you thought you might have made. If you don’t have enough time to proofread your paper, ask a friend to help. If no one is available, you can always hire someone whose job is to write and proofread papers for clients.

Use the Recommended Paper Length

Most of the times, your professor will state the number of words to write in an assignment. But when the paper seems too hard or too easy, you may be tempted to write less or more words. For example, you may be asked to write 20 pages, and since you cannot find enough information, you decide to write only ten pages. This is a grave mistake that could affect your final grade. You should ensure you are always 10% below or above the required word limit. Anything below or above this may lead to a lower grade in the assignment because it shows you did not follow instructions.
